A vintage wine jug in the so-called Westerwalder Steingut style by Paul Wynand, made by Reinhold Merkelbach in Grenzhausen in 1911. It is made of brown-glazed, high-fired earthenware with a geometric motif of black applied elements and a pewter lid. Signed with the Merkelbach stamp and model number 2257.
In the years following its founding, the Reinhold Merkelbach company produced the customary glazed vases and bowls for village families. Only at the end of the 19th century did the company realize that this traditional approach would no longer suffice. Innovations came primarily from the designers. From 1900 onward, Richard Riemerschmid designed more than 80 different models for Merkelbach. In the first decade, other renowned designers joined the company, including Paul Wynand, Albin Müller, and Bruno Mauder. The objects are characterized by hard-fired earthenware with salt glazes, often featuring highly artistic and geometrically applied or engraved motifs in the sleek, characteristic Art Nouveau style.
This 1911 jug is one of the finest examples of Wynand's work.
The catalog with the special price list was published in 1905.
