Fremiet was born in Paris 1824. He was a student of François Rude and exhibited at the salon since 1843.
Started as a lithographer and had the doubted honour of being able to paint the cadavres in the Paris Morgue.
Then became famous for his enormous statues of amongst others Jane of Arc, Velasques, Saint George and also for his small wonderfully detailed animal figures.
He became a member of the Acadamy in 1892, and of the Royal Acadamy in 1904.
Succeeded Antoine Barye as professor of animal painting in the Natural Museum of History.
