Samuel (Sam) Schellink (Utrecht, August 1, 1876 – The Hague, December 20, 1958) was a Dutch pottery painter.[1] He worked from 1891 to 1958.
Career
He was the son of bread vendor Josephus Johannes Bernardus Schellink and Hillegonda Alter. His brother, Stephanus Schellink, was a musician. Sam Schellink[2] was self-taught and began his career in Utrecht, where he worked until 1892. He moved to The Hague and, that same year, joined the N.V. Haagsche Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg as an apprentice painter. He later became known as a pottery painter of the company's eggshell porcelain. To create new designs, he made many charcoal and pencil drawings, gouaches, pastels, and watercolors. His subjects included floral still lifes, landscapes (as a genre), still lifes, and bird scenes. He remained employed by the company until 1914, when it went bankrupt. Afterward, he began painting and trading art. In 1918, he joined the Amphora Tile and Faience Factory in Oegstgeest, where he worked as a pottery painter. His last employer was the Goedewaagen Pottery in Gouda, where he also worked as a pottery painter.
